Ecuador Confirms Support for Morocco’s Autonomy Initiative as the Basis for Resolving Sahara Dispute
The Republic of Ecuador has confirmed, during a press conference held in Rabat, that Morocco’s autonomy initiative constitutes “the basis for resolving” the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara.
Ecuador’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, Gabriela Sommerfeld, emphasized her country’s support for Morocco’s efforts to achieve a political, realistic, and lasting solution to the conflict within the framework of the United Nations. This affirmation followed a meeting between Minister Sommerfeld and Moroccan Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, where Ecuador reiterated its supportive stance towards the Moroccan initiative, underscoring the importance of a political solution accepted by all parties involved.
It is noteworthy that Ecuador had withdrawn its recognition of the so-called “Sahrawi Republic” in October 2024 and severed all communications with this fictitious entity. These positions align with the growing international support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative, which has received recognition and backing from a number of countries and international organizations, thereby bolstering Morocco’s efforts to resolve the regional dispute in a peaceful and sustainable manner that respects its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
