Drâa-Tafilalet Launches First Highway Connecting Midelt to Khenifra at a Cost of 9.5 Billion Dirhams

Follow-up

The Drâa-Tafilalet Regional Council has launched a strategic initiative to enhance road connectivity between the region and neighboring areas, following the approval yesterday, Monday, July 1, 2025, during the July ordinary session, of a project to establish the first highway in the region, which will connect Midelt to Khenifra at a total cost of 9.5 billion dirhams.

The project aims to support road infrastructure and facilitate mobility, especially considering Midelt’s geographical position as a pivotal center between the eastern region and central areas of the country. It is expected to be a key driver for economic and social development by reducing travel time and improving road safety, in addition to stimulating investment and enhancing the region’s attractiveness.

According to the data presented during the session, the highway will be constructed over a distance exceeding 90 kilometers, adhering to modern specifications that take into account the area’s rugged terrain, through partnerships involving the regional council and various ministerial sectors and public and private institutions.

The president of the regional council, Hero Pro, emphasized that this project “represents a qualitative leap in connecting Drâa-Tafilalet to the national highway network,” stressing the council’s commitment to achieving spatial justice and alleviating isolation in mountainous and rural areas.

The project received wide support from council members, who described it as a significant transformation in regional infrastructure, especially as it will help lift the isolation of several municipalities and enhance mountain tourism in an area rich in diverse natural and cultural assets.

Technical and environmental studies for the project are expected to commence in the coming months, after which it will be presented to the relevant ministerial authorities to secure the necessary funding and oversee the implementation phases, paving the way for work to begin by 2026.
