A gunman stormed a skyscraper in Manhattan, New York, and opened fire, resulting in the deaths of four people, including a New York police officer, before the assailant took his own life, according to U.S. media reports.
A security official confirmed to CNN that the attacker spread panic in the area before turning the gun on himself, a detail also corroborated by ABC News.
New York Police Chief Jessica Tisch announced via social media that “the situation is under control, and the gunman, who acted alone, has been neutralized.”
According to media reports, the incident occurred inside building number 345 on Park Avenue, which houses major institutions, including the National Football League (NFL) and Blackstone. The shooter was armed with an assault rifle and moved between floors before being shot down on the thirty-third floor.
A photo of the gunman walking alone with a rifle, wearing a dark jacket and sunglasses, has been circulated, featuring a prominent mustache.
One witness recounted to Agence France-Presse that she was inside the building at the moment of the attack, noting the shooter moved from floor to floor, while another witness, who works in a nearby building, stated they were instructed to remain indoors as soon as gunfire was heard.
Meanwhile, New York Mayor Eric Adams urged those inside the building to stay in place, confirming via X that police were conducting thorough searches.
It is worth mentioning that the targeted building is located near Central Park, and helicopters were observed flying over the area after the shooting began.
