Akhannouch: The Government Has Made Significant Progress in Tax Collection, Expanding Health Coverage, and Social Support

The Head of Government, Aziz Akhannouch, confirmed that Morocco has experienced a notable improvement in tax collection over the past three years. He emphasized that this effort has resulted in an expansion of the tax base and an increase in state resources by 100 million dirhams, which he considers a testament to the government’s commitment to strengthening the general budget.

During the monthly session on public policy at the House of Representatives, Akhannouch explained that “the taxes paid by Moroccan citizens have started to yield clear results, evident in the improvements in cities and hospitals, as well as significant investments in infrastructure.”

He added that the government allocated 50 billion dirhams to upgrade the health sector and has initiated the implementation of the territorial health groups program starting from the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, with plans to extend it to other areas of the kingdom.

Regarding health issues, Akhannouch considered it “one of the top priorities,” indicating that it deserves ongoing attention and listening to the opinions of both deputies and citizens. He promised to continue working and to provide a more comprehensive update next year if things proceed as planned.

On the topic of health coverage, Akhannouch affirmed that the compulsory health insurance scheme “AMO” has now become a comprehensive, solidarity-based, and mandatory system. He stated that those eligible for support under “AMO Solidarity” are indeed receiving it, while other citizens have access to either coverage for non-salaried workers (TNS), corporate coverage, or can avail themselves of “AMO Comprehensive.”

He stressed that the government has fulfilled its duty in establishing the legal and regulatory framework for this system, pointing out that the National Social Security Fund is making significant efforts to activate it. However, some citizens remain hesitant to register, which necessitates further awareness and individual responsibility.

In the context of direct social support programs, Akhannouch revealed that the number of children eligible for support is estimated at 7 million, while the actual number of those in need is 5.5 million. He emphasized that “support will not be granted to the children of the wealthy, to preserve social justice.”

Regarding support for the elderly, the Head of Government clarified that a monthly support of no less than 500 dirhams has been provided to 1.367 million people aged over 60, in line with royal directives aimed at preserving the dignity of this group and enhancing their social protection.

In conclusion, Akhannouch highlighted that the government has successfully expedited the launch of the unified social register, despite earlier forecasts indicating a delay until 2025. He explained that thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Ministries of Interior and Finance, the process commenced in November 2022, marking a new phase in which citizens benefit from support programs on precise and fair bases.
