The World Health Organization warns of a rise in COVID-19 cases due to a new variant and calls for stricter preventive measures.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced an increase in COVID-19 infections again, attributed to the emergence of the new variant “NB.1.8.1,” which is currently being monitored and studied.
In a statement issued by its regional office for the Eastern Mediterranean, the organization clarified that the new variant does not pose an additional health risk compared to previous variants, but it warned of the ongoing evolution of the virus.
It noted that the lack of swift preventive measures could lead to new waves of infections, emphasizing that the current rise in cases aligns with the seasonal activity of the virus, similar to the same period last year.
The organization urged individuals to adhere to preventive measures, highlighting that current vaccines remain effective against the new variant and play a crucial role in preventing severe symptoms and deaths.
The WHO called on countries to integrate COVID-19 control into seasonal respiratory disease strategies and to enhance communication with communities to combat misinformation, empowering individuals to make informed health decisions.
