Morocco Leads Global Rankings in Chinese Tea Imports
Morocco has made significant strides in its trade relations with China, becoming the largest importer of Chinese tea in the world during 2024. This development reflects the deepening economic partnership between the two countries.
According to a report from the Subcommittee on Tea Industry of the China Agricultural International Cooperation Association, Morocco imported approximately 80,600 tons of Chinese tea last year, marking an increase of 34.68% compared to 2023.
The total value of these imports reached $243 million, representing an annual growth of 27.61%. This solidifies Morocco’s position as the primary market for Chinese tea, surpassing traditional markets that have historically led global demand in this vital agricultural sector.
Green tea comprises the vast majority of Morocco’s imports, accounting for 99.85%. This reflects the prevailing tastes of Moroccan consumers and local dietary habits, which have made this type particularly popular.
These figures come amid the growth of international trade in Chinese tea, with total imports and exports reaching 428,100 tons in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 5.3%. The overall value of these exchanges stood at $1.58 billion.
This outstanding performance cements Morocco’s role as a key player in the international market for high-value agricultural products and highlights the success of China’s strategy to deepen agricultural partnerships with countries like Morocco, where demand is stable and increasing.
