Morocco Among the Top Five Economies in Africa by 2025

Morocco continues to strengthen its position as an emerging economic power on the African continent. Recent data from the International Monetary Fund shows that the kingdom ranks fifth in the list of the strongest African economies for 2025, with a gross domestic product nearing $165.8 billion at current prices.

This positioning reflects the ongoing dynamism of the national economy and the strategic choices Morocco has adopted over the past two decades to consolidate its regional leadership. According to the same data, South Africa heads the list with over $410 billion, followed by Egypt with $347.3 billion, Algeria with $268.9 billion, and Nigeria with $188.3 billion. Morocco surpasses major economies such as Kenya, Ethiopia, Angola, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana.

This positive performance is attributed to various factors, primarily the development of infrastructure, expansion of the manufacturing base, and significant investment in renewable energy and logistics services. Morocco’s openness to its African surroundings through major investment projects in West and Central Africa has also played a crucial role in enhancing its status as a prominent economic player regionally.

Simultaneously, the kingdom has begun implementing structural reforms targeting the tax system and public administration, aiming to improve the business climate. Additionally, it has adopted advanced digital strategies, which have helped attract investments and diversify export offerings, especially in the automotive, aviation, and chemical industries.

However, the continuation of economic progress remains contingent on overcoming several challenges, the most prominent of which are the impacts of climate change on the agricultural sector and water resources, persistent energy dependency, as well as social and regional inequalities. These challenges demand more inclusive and equitable public policies to ensure a fair distribution of development gains across different regions of the kingdom.
