Massacre at July 5 Stadium in Algeria Reveals Collapse of Sports Infrastructure

Ahmed Oussar

July 5 Stadium in the Algerian capital witnessed one of the most horrific tragedies in the history of Algerian football, as a section of the stands collapsed during celebrations by fans of CR Belouizdad after winning the local league title. The toll was heavy: one young fan dead and 11 others injured, some in critical condition. Collective joy transformed in an instant into screams, panic, and chaos, against a bloody backdrop that reflects the extent of neglect plaguing the country’s sports infrastructure.

The historic stadium, which was supposed to be a symbol of Algerian sports, has turned into a deadly trap. Fans did not just fall from the heights of the stands; they fell victim to years of negligence and crumbling facilities that have remained unmaintained despite repeated warnings. What happened was not a sudden accident, but a direct result of the state’s failure to protect the lives of its citizens in its stadiums.

The Civil Protection agency confirmed that the collapse occurred immediately after the match, amidst a rush and crowding in an area unqualified to accommodate such a number of fans. The stadium, constructed over five decades ago, is no longer safe, yet crucial matches continue to be held there in front of tens of thousands of supporters.

The Professional League had no choice but to cancel the awarding ceremony, postpone celebrations, and observe a moment of silence for this tragedy that has exposed the underlying issues.
