Cooking Arts Competition Opens Doors of Hope for Prison Inmates
On Tuesday, June 25, 2025, the local prison of Oudaia in Marrakech hosted the final qualifiers for the second edition of the “Culinary Arts in Prisons” competition. This pioneering initiative is organized by the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration, aiming to enhance inmates’ skills in cooking and pastry making as a means of social and professional reintegration.
This edition saw the participation of 20 male and female inmates, selected after passing prior qualifying rounds. They were equally divided between the cooking and baking/pastry categories, with their creations evaluated by a panel of professional chefs based on precise criteria focusing on technical skills, innovation, and presentation quality.
The competition featured dishes that reflected the practical training participants received within the prison facilities from companies specializing in communal cooking, adding a professional and serious tone to the event.
In addition to the symbolic recognition, the winners received incentive prizes, including employment contracts with companies in the communal catering sector, and cash rewards of 5,000 dirhams for the first place, 4,000 dirhams for the second, and 3,000 dirhams for the third, along with an encouragement grant of 2,000 dirhams for the remaining participants.
This initiative falls under the professional rehabilitation programs implemented by the General Delegation for Prison Administration, in partnership with the private sector, aiming to equip inmates with skills that enable them to reintegrate positively into society after their release and enhance their job market opportunities.
This event underscores the importance of involving various stakeholders in the success of the reform process within prisons through tangible initiatives that invest in human potential, even from behind bars.
