The British stance on the Sahara issue has undergone a notable shift, with Foreign Secretary David Lammy announcing today from Rabat that his country considers Morocco’s autonomy proposal as “the most realistic and pragmatic solution” to resolving this regional dispute.
In a press conference held in Rabat on Sunday, Lammy clarified that “the UK is fully aware of the significance of the Sahara issue for Morocco, and it is time to reach a lasting and definitive solution that offers a better future for the population.”
The British official also stated that London encourages the parties to engage in a United Nations process, viewing autonomy as the most realistic, pragmatic, and reliable means to resolving the dispute. He expressed confidence in supporting the special envoy for the Sahara and committed to working towards the UN goal of a resolution as soon as possible.
Lammy mentioned that the UK will work regionally and internationally in coordination with the UN to achieve this solution.
In this context, he welcomed Morocco’s willingness to positively engage in the autonomy framework to enter reasonable negotiations alongside all parties.
For his part, Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita remarked that King Mohammed VI has established the foundations of Moroccan foreign policy based on clarity, and he will continue this approach with the UK, emphasizing that London’s support strengthens the UN-led path aimed at reaching a realistic and viable political solution.
