Trump Announces Completion of the Prisoner Exchange Deal

President Donald Trump announced on Friday the completion of a major prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia.

Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform, “A large prisoner exchange has just been completed between Russia and Ukraine.”

He added, “Congratulations to both sides on this negotiation. Will this lead to something significant?”, without providing further details.

This announcement follows an agreement between Moscow and Kyiv during talks in Istanbul this month to exchange one thousand prisoners from each side.

The two countries have carried out several prisoner exchanges since the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in February 2022.

Both sides released 205 captured soldiers in a similar exchange earlier this month.

In a separate context, the Kremlin announced this week that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Trump discussed a potential prisoner exchange deal between the United States and Russia.

Putin rejected the American president’s attempts for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine.
