The Moroccan army possesses the Chinese HQ-9 air defense system, which has changed the balance of confrontation between Pakistan and India.
The Chinese HQ-9 air defense system has prominently featured in military discussions, especially after its notable success during recent air confrontations between India and Pakistan, where it demonstrated effectiveness in countering complex air attacks and contributed to the downing of dozens of drones. This performance has drawn attention to countries that possess this system, including Morocco, which acquired it as part of its efforts to enhance its defensive capabilities and secure its airspace against potential threats.
The choice of the Royal Moroccan Armed Forces to adopt the HQ-9 reflects a qualitative shift in its military strategy. This system employs advanced technology that allows it to engage a wide range of targets, including fighter jets, cruise missiles, and drones. The HQ-9 has a range of up to 200 kilometers, can reach altitudes of 30 kilometers, and its missiles travel at speeds of 4.2 Mach, making it efficient in targeting highly maneuverable objects at various altitudes.
What sets the HQ-9 apart is its ability to integrate within a multi-layered defense network, providing countries that utilize it with significant flexibility in developing an integrated air defense system without excessive reliance on Western systems. The Pakistani experience has revealed the effectiveness of this system in real combat environments, where it helped neutralize complex attack waves and, along with other systems, contributed to the downing of more than 70 drones, some of which were advanced models.
In the Moroccan context, this type of weaponry enhances the army’s deterrent capabilities and its readiness to face escalating security challenges in the region. It also indicates Morocco’s desire to diversify its arms sources and build new strategic partnerships, especially with China, which has become a key player in the defense industry market.
Owning the HQ-9 places Morocco among the countries equipped with defense systems capable of efficiently securing its airspace, providing it with an advanced strategic tool that helps maintain military balance in the region and respond promptly and effectively to any potential aerial threat.
