Commencement of Works for Africa’s First Electric Car Battery Factory in Northern Morocco

Gotion Power Morocco is set to launch the construction of a massive electric car battery factory in the coming days, strategically located in the north of the country near Kenitra. This project, with a total cost of $6.5 billion, is being implemented in partnership with the European-Chinese company Gotion High Tech, following an investment agreement signed with the government last June.

Khalid Qalam, the company’s general manager, revealed at an industrial conference in Rabat that the preparatory works have been completed and that initial production operations are expected to begin in the third quarter of 2026. The first phase will cost $1.3 billion and will provide a production capacity of 20 gigawatts, with plans to double this later to 40 gigawatts in agreement with the Moroccan government, although no timeline has been specified for the second phase.

The factory will produce batteries and key components such as cathodes and anodes, with a significant portion of production aimed at European markets. Qalam stated that the company has received orders from major European manufacturers, reflecting the increasing interest in Morocco’s industrial potential in this advanced sector.

With this project, Morocco is reinforcing its position as a regional hub in the electric car industry, supported by its proximity to Europe and an industrial infrastructure that includes major factories such as Renault and Stellantis. The Moroccan automotive sector has achieved significant growth in 2024, with exports reaching MAD 157 billion, a 6.3% increase according to official figures.
