The African Football Confederation has signed a new partnership agreement with the European Commission, making the latter an official partner for the next two editions of the Africa Cup of Nations for both men and women, scheduled to take place in Morocco in 2025.
The agreement was signed in Cairo on Sunday, May 18, between Patrice Motsepe, President of CAF, and Jozef Síkela, European Commissioner for International Partnerships. It includes support for the organization of the men’s Africa Cup of Nations, which will be held from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, and the women’s Africa Cup of Nations, scheduled for July 5 to July 26, 2025.
According to the CAF President, this partnership represents a clear vote of confidence from the international community in the continental organization and acknowledges the reform efforts being made in governance, transparency, and anti-corruption. He also confirmed that the Commission would support the African School Championship, in addition to the 2025 and 2027 Africa Cup editions, reflecting a long-term commitment to developing football on the continent.
For her part, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized the strong relationship between Europe and Africa, noting that the European Union remains the largest trading partner and investor on the continent. This step represents a natural extension of a multifaceted partnership encompassing sports, development, and innovation.
Morocco’s selection to host these major events further solidifies its position as a key player in the continental sports scene, providing an opportunity to leverage its partnership with the European Union to enhance sports infrastructure and expand its diplomatic influence through football.
