The administration of the local prison in Taounate has firmly denied what it described as “malicious allegations” published on an online platform, which claimed there were serious deficiencies in cleanliness and health services, a shortage of bedding and blankets, and the prevalence of bribery and favoritism within the institution.
In a statement to the public, the administration confirmed that the claims made in the article are mere fabrications unrelated to reality, aiming to tarnish the reputation of the institution and its employees. It highlighted that health services are provided regularly despite the absence of a permanent general practitioner, with two weekly visits from doctors from the Bourekaz and Ras El Ma prisons in Fez, alongside a permanent dentist. Inmates are also periodically transported to regional hospitals in Taounate and Fez based on pre-scheduled medical appointments.
Regarding the allegations of inadequate bedding and blankets, the administration clarified that these are available in sufficient quantities and distributed to inmates based on needs and seasonal requirements. Concerning cleanliness, it emphasized that all facilities, including housing areas, undergo regular cleaning operations in the morning and evening, firmly refuting claims of “lack of cleanliness.”
On the issue of bribery and favoritism, the administration stated that its dealings with inmates are conducted within the framework of the law, without discrimination or preference, ensuring that all prisoners have the right to shop at the institution’s store once a month according to a specific schedule for each wing of the prison.
The statement concluded with an announcement of the administration’s intention to file an official complaint with the relevant judicial authorities against the website, considering the “unacceptable defamation” that undermines the dignity of the institution’s staff and the credibility of their work, reiterating its full commitment to applying the law and ensuring proper living conditions and respectful treatment for all inmates.
