Counselor Merz stated in an interview with WDR television: “The Christian Democratic Union in Germany has lifted the restrictions on the supply of long-range weapons to Kyiv.”
He added: “Britain, France, the United States, and now Germany have removed the limits on the range of arms shipments to Ukraine, allowing Kyiv the capability to strike targets within Russian territory using long-range weapons.”
He further noted: “There are no longer any restrictions on the range of weapons supplied to Ukraine—neither from the British, nor from the French, nor from our side, nor from the Americans. This means that Ukraine can now defend itself, including executing strikes on military targets within Russian territory. Until a certain point, it was not able to do so.”
He continued, clarifying, “What is required now is to provide these weapons to Ukraine.”
It is worth mentioning that Merz indicated in mid-April that Germany might agree to supply Taurus cruise missiles to Ukraine following coordination with European partners. For his part, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius stated that there are “several arguments” against taking this step.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that Moscow “will consider any strike by German Taurus missiles on Russian targets as Berlin’s participation in the military actions alongside Kyiv.”
