Artificial Intelligence Redefines Public Auditing in Morocco

Nadia Fettah, Minister of Economy and Finance, confirmed that artificial intelligence represents a crucial lever for reinventing the practices and tools used in public sector auditing, which is experiencing rapid digital transformation and increasing interconnectedness. This statement was made during the inauguration of the international conference on internal auditing in the era of artificial intelligence, held in Salé under the auspices of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the establishment of the General Inspectorate of Finance.

The minister pointed out that artificial intelligence enhances the concept of "augmented auditing," which is based on cooperation between human intelligence and algorithms, enabling the immediate analysis of vast amounts of data, the detection of discrepancies, the identification of risks, and the proposal of action plans. She added that this transformation redefines the role of the public auditor, which is no longer limited to reviewing the past but now includes verifying the methods, quality, and integrity of data, as well as the robustness of automated systems that underpin certain public decisions.

Fettah emphasized that this evolution presents several challenges, including overcoming algorithmic biases, ensuring data confidentiality and integrity, enhancing auditors’ capacities, and continuously adapting the legal and regulatory framework. She stressed that the success of this transformation relies not only on technology but also on solid partnerships with the private sector, academic institutions, international partners, and civil society, which demands greater transparency.

The minister noted that Morocco has engaged in an ambitious dynamic to integrate artificial intelligence into its public system as part of a strategic approach inspired by best international practices, focusing on national priorities aimed at modernizing governance, improving administrative performance, better serving citizens, and preparing the state to face future challenges.

The conference was organized by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans Abroad, and the Ministry of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, reflecting the leading role of the General Inspectorate of Finance in the field of internal auditing. The event brought together experts and decision-makers to discuss the future of public auditing in light of artificial intelligence and served as an occasion to honor former ministers and general inspectors from Morocco and African countries.

The opening ceremony was attended by the Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, Amal Al-Falih-Saghrouchni, General Inspector of Finance Mohamed Monchid, and World Bank Vice President and General Auditor Anki D’Angelo, marking a true launch point for a profound change in public governance concepts.
