Title: Lawyer Ahmed Sawab Arrested on Charges of Threatening Terrorism and Endangering a Protected Person’s Life

Tunis – A judge from the anti-terrorism judicial pole granted permission today, Monday, for the arrest of lawyer and former judge Ahmed Sawab as part of an investigation into several terrorism-related charges, according to an official judicial source.

The spokesperson for the anti-terrorism judicial pole informed the Tunis Afrique Press agency that the public prosecutor at the Court of Appeal in Tunis ordered an investigation against Sawab following statements he made in a video circulated on social media, in which he appeared outside the Lawyers’ House on April 19.

The charges against him include threatening to commit terrorist crimes, attempting to influence judicial decisions, endangering the life of a protected person, and threatening acts punishable by the criminal law.

In the video, Sawab is seen making a slashing gesture with his hand at neck level, addressing a judge who was considering several cases. The judicial authorities deemed this a serious threat requiring legal action.

Judicial authorities confirmed that the incident was documented and observed by the National Unit for the Investigation of Terrorism Crimes, which prepared a report submitted to the Attorney General of the Court of Appeal due to the defendant’s status as a lawyer.

This morning, security forces executed an arrest operation against Ahmed Sawab at his home and took him to the anti-terrorism judicial pole, where he was interrogated before the decision to place him under investigation was made.

These developments come amid a politically and legally charged atmosphere, raising questions about the limits of freedom of expression and the responsibility of public discourse in judicial contexts.
