Amal Al-Fallah Al-Sghroushni, the Minister Delegate in Charge of Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, confirmed that artificial intelligence represents a major priority within the framework of the national digital transformation initiatives during a session of oral questions at the House of Representatives on Monday.

The minister explained, in response to questions about artificial intelligence and technological innovation, that Morocco is among the first countries to adopt UNESCO’s recommendation on the ethics of artificial intelligence, noting that the organization issued a special report on the kingdom’s readiness in this area.

The government official commented on "Oxford Insights" classification of Morocco in the 2024 Government AI Readiness Index, which placed the kingdom at 101 out of 188 countries. She asserted that this ranking does not fully reflect the national efforts, particularly regarding digital infrastructure and data availability. Simultaneously, she highlighted that Morocco ranks sixth in Africa, indicating its significant potential for technological advancement.

The minister emphasized that artificial intelligence is integrated within the national strategy “Digital Morocco 2030,” working to enhance its use to support the digitization of public services and develop the digital economy, which is manifested through several important initiatives.

Al-Sghroushni pointed out the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding to establish a regional Arab-African digital hub specializing in artificial intelligence and data science, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme, aiming to enhance regional coordination in digitization. Additionally, a network of centers of excellence, termed “Al-Jazari Institutes,” has been launched in the twelve regions to develop AI-backed digital solutions, along with two national programs to train youth aged 8 to 18 in digital skills and artificial intelligence.

The minister announced that a national forum on artificial intelligence will be organized in early July to broaden the discussion on responsible artificial intelligence and to strengthen coordination among various stakeholders, supporting the technological development path in Morocco.
