Japan has recently welcomed its first shipment of citrus fruits imported from Morocco, marking the first time Morocco exports citrus to Japan, as announced by the “Morocco Foodex” organization.
The organization confirmed the arrival of the first container of Moroccan citrus in Japan, officially marking Morocco’s entry into this distinguished market.
Japan, which ranks as the thirteenth largest buyer of Moroccan agricultural and food exports, is known for its strict quality standards and traceability requirements, making this achievement a significant milestone for the Moroccan agricultural sector.
Moroccan varieties, such as the famous “Nadorcott,” have successfully met Japan’s precise health standards, opening the door for the diversification of exports.
Japanese importers, such as Yuichi Fukuda and Kinto Takigami, praised the quality of Moroccan citrus and its appeal to Japanese consumers, confirming its potential in the market.
In 2023, Morocco’s agricultural and food exports to Japan reached 18,000 tons with a value of 14 billion yen, with hopes of increasing volume by capitalizing on the unique position of Moroccan products.
The United States and Australia are the main citrus exporters to Japan, with Australia holding a 51.4% market share and the United States 40.3% of the imports.
