Istanbul: Marmara Sea Earthquake Followed by More Than 185 Aftershocks
Istanbul witnessed a series of aftershocks today, Thursday, according to the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), following a powerful earthquake that struck the Marmara Sea on Wednesday.
The agency reported that one of the aftershocks registered a magnitude of 4.1 on the Richter scale, adding that the number of tremors following the main earthquake exceeded 185, with intensities ranging from 4 to 5.
The main earthquake that hit on Wednesday off the coast of the Marmara Sea had a magnitude of 6.2, causing panic in Turkey’s largest cities, particularly Istanbul, where it was felt strongly.
Turkish Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu stated in a post on X that 236 people were injured as a result of the earthquake, with 173 of those injuries occurring in Istanbul alone.
The spokesperson explained that 15 individuals were transported to hospitals for treatment, noting that some casualties occurred because people jumped from buildings in fear during the seismic activity.
Turkish authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, while the disaster management agency has warned citizens to stay away from damaged buildings and to exercise caution in anticipation of possible further tremors.
