On Saturday, the city of Rachidia witnessed the signing of a partnership agreement aimed at developing a new cultural complex with a budget of 120 million dirhams. This project is expected to reshape the cultural landscape of the region, significantly enhancing its infrastructure for artistic and creative pursuits.
A Collaborative Initiative
The agreement brought together several officials, including Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, the Wali of the Drâa-Tafilalet region, Saïd Zenib, as well as local council leaders and representatives from the Al Omrane Group. The anticipated cultural complex will feature a main theater with a capacity for 1,000 spectators, along with a multimedia library, an arts institute, a heritage interpretation center, exhibition spaces, and various areas for cultural activities. This multifaceted project is designed to support local creativity and widen access to cultural services.
A Response to Local Needs
Speaking to the press, Bensaid highlighted that the project addresses longstanding needs expressed by local residents and stakeholders. He noted that the Rachidia region boasts a rich and diverse cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, reflecting a profound historical and cultural continuum. This cultural investment is part of a broader initiative aimed at bolstering infrastructure in the Drâa-Tafilalet region and supporting endeavors that enhance local identity and preserve its components.
Preserving Historical Significance
On the same day, Minister Bensaid undertook a site visit to the ancient city of Sijilmasa, where he assessed ongoing preservation and restoration efforts. This is part of a project aimed at revitalizing Sijilmasa, a site that stands as one of the most significant historical landmarks in southeastern Morocco. The visit focused on monitoring the current phases of development within the archaeological site, with the goal of transforming it into an open space for research and knowledge—a cultural and tourist attraction capable of fostering local development and connecting the present with the region’s deep historical memory.
