NASA has announced the inclusion of Moroccan couscous in the menu for astronauts on the “Artemis 2” mission. This step is part of the agency’s efforts to provide a diverse diet that reflects the cultural backgrounds of the crews while meeting the requirements of long-duration space missions.
The agency confirmed that the couscous has been specially adapted to comply with safety and storage standards in a zero-gravity environment, while retaining its nutritional characteristics and traditional ingredients. This approach aims to support the psychological and moral well-being of the astronauts, in addition to meeting their biological needs during the mission.
The “Artemis 2” mission to the moon will last approximately 10 days and features a food list of 189 items selected with precision to ensure astronaut safety and ease of meal preparation during the journey.
The inclusion of Moroccan couscous is part of NASA’s strategy to promote cultural diversity in space missions, making food more than just a source of physical energy; it serves as a human element connecting astronauts to their homeland and culture during their exploratory journey.
