Four Moroccan Referees Named for 2026 World Cup

Four Moroccan referees have been selected to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This historic tournament, featuring 48 teams and 104 matches, marks a significant moment for Moroccan representation in world football.

Refereeing Excellence on the World Stage

The Moroccan referees include Jallal Ghead as the main referee, Mustafa Akrkad and Zakariya Brince as assistant referees, and Hamza El Farik as part of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) team. Their selection highlights Morocco’s growing influence in international football, especially in a World Cup that promises to be the largest in its history.

FIFA has announced a total of 170 officials for the event, comprising 52 main referees, 88 assistants, and 30 VAR specialists from six continental confederations and 50 national associations. This is an increase of 41 referees compared to the previous World Cup in Qatar, reflecting a commitment to enhance officiating standards.

Selection Process and Training

According to FIFA, the selection was driven by a rigorous evaluation process that spanned over three years, assessing referees based on their high and consistent performance. Pierluigi Collina, FIFA’s chief of refereeing, stated that the chosen officials underwent a detailed selection procedure, including participation in training programs and management of matches in FIFA-sanctioned competitions.

Starting May 31, selected officials will engage in a ten-day preparatory camp in Miami. The VAR officials will reside in Dallas, which will host the International Broadcast Center, while on-field referees and their assistants will continue their training in Miami.

Implementing Innovative Technologies

FIFA also confirmed that new measures will be enacted to improve the pace of play and minimize time wastage, a proposal embraced during the 140th annual general meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB) last February. This includes three amendments to the VAR protocol, aimed at refining decision-making processes.

Additionally, portable referee cameras that proved effective during last year’s Club World Cup will again be deployed. An AI-driven stabilization program will enhance image quality in real-time, reducing the effects of motion blur and allowing fans to experience the game from the referee’s perspective.

The selection of Moroccan referees not only underscores their individual achievements but also signifies Morocco’s growing stature in global football, poised to enhance the quality of officiating at this unprecedented World Cup.
