Cosumar launches an industrial project for the production of food-grade CO₂.
A A

Follow-Up

Cosumar has announced the launch of an innovative industrial project for producing liquid food-grade carbon dioxide (LCO₂), as part of its strategy to diversify its industrial model and enhance its performance.

The group clarified in a statement that the project involves the establishment of a new industrial unit in Casablanca, within a progressive structural approach that is the first of its kind in the region. This reflects the industrial dynamism it follows, particularly regarding the development of high added-value activities integrated into its production system.

This project is based on the recovery, purification, and conversion of carbon dioxide gas generated from industrial processes, aiming to produce liquid food-grade gas with a purity exceeding 99.9 percent, in accordance with international standards set by both the International Society of Beverage Technologists and the European Industrial Gases Association. This guarantees the quality and safety of the product for precise food and industrial uses.

This new activity will enhance existing industrial flows and convert them into a vital resource serving several strategic sectors, including food and pharmaceutical industries, deep freezing, agriculture, and desalination, given the gas’s diverse applications in technical and industrial fields.

From an investment perspective, the financial envelope for the project is expected to exceed 500 million dirhams, which will strengthen Cosumar’s positioning within the national industrial landscape and contribute to reducing reliance on imports by providing local production of this previously imported gas.

The production unit is expected to begin operations by the end of 2026, with an initial production capacity of 20,000 tons annually, relying on advanced technology that has already started to be acquired as part of the first phase at the Casablanca refinery.

The project is part of a comprehensive approach that the group adopts to improve energy efficiency and rationalize resources, as it will help reduce the carbon footprint while creating added value and job opportunities, alongside enhancing national expertise in valorizing secondary industrial products and ensuring a stable supply for industrial stakeholders.

In this context, the group confirmed its success in reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 50 percent since 2016, reflecting the effectiveness of its environmental and industrial strategy.

This project represents a first phase within an ambitious program that Cosumar intends to expand to other industrial sites, with future prospects for producing renewable green LCO₂ extracted from biomass, in response to increasing demand and promoting a transition to more sustainable industry.
