Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohammed Mehdi Ben Sayid, arrived today, Tuesday, in Marrakech for a field visit to several prominent historical and archaeological sites, to closely monitor the state of local heritage and track the progress of ongoing restoration projects.
The tour began at the gates of “Bab Aylan” and “Bab Ghuemat,” where the minister was briefed on the experience of heritage interpretation centers that the ministry is banking on to bring history closer to visitors through modern presentation tools aimed at re-presenting Moroccan memory in an interactive manner.
The visit extended to the site of Laghmat, one of Morocco’s oldest historical cities, before encompassing the El Badi Palace and the Bahia Palace, both of which encapsulate the richness and diversity of Moroccan architecture across various historical periods.
The visit was primarily technical, with a significant portion dedicated to inspecting restoration works opened following the damages caused by the Al-Haouz earthquake. The minister observed the progress of the works, focusing on compliance with the set standards in the rehabilitation of these sites without compromising their historical and architectural integrity.
These movements come amid an official push to enhance the presence of heritage within the economic and tourism cycle, by rehabilitating historical sites and making them more attractive while preserving their symbolic significance as part of the national cultural identity.
