Minister of Health and Social Protection Warns: 53% of Tuberculosis Cases in Morocco are Extrapulmonary

On the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day 2026, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection announced an enhancement of its efforts to detect and manage various forms of tuberculosis, with a special focus on extrapulmonary forms, which now represent the majority of reported cases in the country.

In a press release, the ministry stated that this year’s commemoration comes under the theme “Tuberculosis Goes Beyond the Lungs,” aimed at raising awareness about non-pulmonary forms of the disease. The ministry highlighted that this event provides an opportunity to strengthen awareness initiatives and encourage early access to health services.

The 2026 edition aims to support healthcare professionals in identifying and managing extrapulmonary forms and to enhance comprehensive detection efforts. The ministry noted that 53% of the new tuberculosis cases reported in 2025 in Morocco pertain to these forms, necessitating an increase in clinical vigilance and improved early diagnosis.

To bolster the scientific aspect, the ministry announced the organization of a national online seminar on March 26, 2026, featuring officials, experts, representatives of scientific associations, and NGOs, as well as UN agencies, to discuss the epidemiological situation and the latest developments related to the diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

The ministry reiterated that combating tuberculosis remains a public health priority as part of the National Strategic Plan 2024-2030, which aims to reduce mortality by 60% and decrease the incidence rate by 35% by 2030.

This plan focuses on enhancing early detection, improving treatment success rates, expanding access to preventive treatment, and strengthening governance through a multi-sectoral approach.

Furthermore, the ministry continues its efforts to improve access to diagnostic services, enhance the capabilities of healthcare professionals, ensure free treatment in health facilities, and develop partnerships with various stakeholders.

The ministry emphasized that tuberculosis is a preventable and treatable disease, provided there is early diagnosis and adherence to treatment protocols, calling for comprehensive mobilization from all stakeholders to curb its spread in Morocco.
