The Czech Republic recognizes Moroccan autonomy and strengthens its consular presence in the Sahara
The Czech Republic has deemed that “genuine autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty is the most viable solution” for the conflict over the Sahara, affirming its commitment to act according to this principle.
This stance was articulated in a joint statement issued in Rabat following a meeting between Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation, and Moroccans residing abroad, Nasser Bourita, and Czech Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Petr Macek, during his first visit to the kingdom.
The statement clarified that the Czech Ambassador to Morocco will visit the Sahara region in preparation for visits by Czech businesspeople and to support joint economic initiatives. It also announced that the Czech Embassy in Rabat will expand its consular services to include the Sahara, reflecting its supportive position on the territorial integrity of the kingdom at diplomatic, economic, and consular levels.
At the same time, the Czech Republic welcomed the adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 2797 (2025), asserting that the Moroccan autonomy proposal presented in 2007 constitutes the most suitable, serious, and realistic basis for reaching a fair and lasting political solution to the dispute.
Both ministers reiterated their support for the personal envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations to the Sahara and the efforts to advance the political process towards a final resolution of this regional conflict.
