Rabat Celebrates Mexican Women’s Creativity in a Photographic Exhibition Documenting Community Memory

The Cervantes Institute in Rabat hosted the opening of the photographic exhibition “Mujer” (Woman) by Mexican artist Mariana Yampolsky on Wednesday, attended by prominent figures from various cultural and diplomatic fields.

Organized in partnership with the Embassy of Mexico in Morocco, this exhibition features 25 black-and-white photographs drawn from the Mexican Ministry of Culture’s photo collection, showcasing portraits of women from different regions of Mexico during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s.

Anastasio Sánchez Zamorano, the director of the institute, affirmed that Yampolsky’s works are internationally recognized as a documentary heritage of Mexico by UNESCO, highlighting that this recognition reflects the richness and diversity of Mexican culture.

Enrique Ojeda Villa, the Spanish ambassador to Morocco, praised the exhibition for shedding light on the creative contributions of Mexican women and their role within society.

Mabel Pilar Gómez Oliver, the Mexican ambassador to Morocco, noted that this artistic event, “full of love and dedication,” reflects life in Mexico during the twentieth century, illustrated through photographs that emphasize the details and diversity of its society.

Mariana Yampolsky is considered one of the leading figures in Mexican photography, known for documenting the lives of ordinary people, as well as her work in printmaking, lithography, painting, and as a curator and editor.

This exhibition will run until June 30, offering visitors a chance to explore the richness of Mexican cultural practices, as reflected in the intricacies of daily life, rituals, and celebrations.
