The Lebanese government issued an unprecedented decision on Monday morning during an emergency session, banning military activities of Hezbollah and declaring them illegal. The Lebanese army has been tasked with implementing this decision in a manner it sees fit.
In comments on the decision, the Lebanese Minister of Justice affirmed that anyone engaging in military activity with the party will be pursued and arrested immediately. He emphasized that the government will work towards disarming Hezbollah and pursuing its armed groups to ensure the state’s sovereignty and citizen safety.
This move comes amid escalating internal tensions regarding the presence of armed militias and demands from political forces and civil society for the state to strictly enforce laws on all armed groups outside the regular army and official security forces.
