International Report: Morocco Among the Leaders in Developing the Green Hydrogen Economy in Africa

A report issued by the H2Global Foundation indicates that Morocco is among the most prepared African nations to develop a green hydrogen economy, alongside Egypt, Namibia, and South Africa. This progress is supported by Morocco’s abundant natural resources and advanced infrastructure in renewable energy.

The report highlights that the kingdom possesses significant capabilities that position it to play a crucial role in this promising energy sector, including immense solar and wind energy potential, as well as an industrial and port infrastructure capable of supporting hydrogen production projects and its derivatives, such as green ammonia.

Furthermore, the strategic geographical location of Morocco, close to European markets, enhances its opportunities to become a hub for exporting clean energy to Europe, especially in light of the growing global demand for green hydrogen as a key solution to reduce carbon emissions.

In this context, the kingdom has launched major projects and investments in the field, with the first phase of Morocco’s green hydrogen strategy encompassing massive industrial projects worth approximately $32 billion, while allocating vast areas for establishing industrial complexes specialized in hydrogen and its derivatives.

The report also underscores that the development of the green hydrogen sector in Africa represents an opportunity to enhance the energy transition across the continent, develop new low-carbon industries, create job opportunities, and boost energy exports for countries that possess the necessary natural resources and industrial infrastructure.

The report concludes that, thanks to its renewable energy strategy and the integration of its industrial and logistical projects, Morocco is solidifying its position as a key player in building a green hydrogen economy at both the African and international levels.
