The seventh edition of the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair has kicked off in Marrakech, featuring extensive participation from Moroccan and African artists.

The events this year will run from February 5 to 8, with the involvement of twenty galleries representing twelve African countries, aimed at highlighting the contemporary African art scene and connecting artists, collectors, and cultural professionals worldwide.

The fair derives its name from the number of countries on the continent and includes art exhibitions, performances, cultural and creative research, as well as discussions on books that explore the archives of the Casablanca School of Arts, which significantly influenced the teaching and discourse of modern arts in Morocco post-independence, and revealed the efforts of various authors in documenting the cultural history of the kingdom.

The current edition also discusses artists’ perspectives on the concept of “Future Borders” and the dynamics of the new generation of African creators, within a broader context of contemporary art and cultural issues.

Several Moroccan artists are showcasing their works at the fair, including Moubarak Bouhchich, Mahi Binebine, Mohamed Kiliṭo, Farid Belkahia, Sana Al-Raqas, Ali Sharqawi, and Ghizlane Sahli, addressing various themes encompassing identity, memory, migration, body, and belonging.
