The European Union reaffirms its support for the autonomy initiative in Western Sahara

The European Union has reiterated its support for the political negotiation process concerning the Western Sahara issue, relying on the autonomy proposal presented by Morocco. This response comes in answer to a written question posed by 13 Members of the European Parliament regarding the bloc’s recent stance on this dispute.

High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, confirmed that the 27 member states adopt a unified position supporting the political process led by the United Nations, emphasizing that the solution must be realistic, practical, and lasting, in line with Security Council resolutions.

The parliamentary question followed diplomatic developments linked to official meetings between Brussels and Rabat, wherein the signing deputies sought clarification on the current European approach and its alignment with the United Nations’ trajectory.

The EU’s response left no room for confusion, highlighting the continued commitment to the UN-led process while indicating that the autonomy initiative is viewed as a serious and credible basis by an increasing number of international partners.

This position reflects a stable European perspective on the file, despite limited movements within the legislative body, at a time when the dispute is witnessing rapid diplomatic interactions on an international scale.
