The European Union Affirms: Autonomy is the Most Realistic Option for Resolving the Sahara Conflict

Dimitri Tsantchev, the European Union Ambassador to Morocco, reaffirmed today the depth of the strategic relations between the Kingdom and the European Union, stating that their long-term partnership is based on continuous dialogue among all parties.

During a press conference at the EU headquarters in Rabat, the ambassador highlighted the joint council between Morocco and the European Union that convened in Barcelona at the end of January, emphasizing the commitment of the 27 member states to strengthen this partnership, making it more inclusive and effective.

Tsantchev announced that the council allowed the EU to define its official stance on the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, confirming the EU’s support and that of its member states for the efforts made by the UN Secretary-General and his personal envoy, based on the Moroccan autonomy plan. The ambassador stated, “Autonomy-based solutions are among the most realistic and applicable options, and it is essential to engage all parties to present their proposals for a mutually acceptable final resolution.”

He added that Morocco is an indispensable strategic partner in various fields, notably migration, climate change, energy security, and regional stability in North Africa and the Sahel, as well as its pivotal role in combating terrorism and cross-border crime.

In the context of major initiatives, the ambassador highlighted Morocco’s contribution to the “Mediterranean Charter” launched by the EU to enhance cooperation with southern Mediterranean countries in the areas of sustainable development, clean energy, education, and security. The charter includes over 100 tangible initiatives, including renewable energy projects, the establishment of a Mediterranean university, and an artificial intelligence-based early warning system for natural disasters.

Tsantchev pointed out the impact of EU-Morocco cooperation on the daily lives of citizens, particularly through the “Dignity” program, which supported the expansion of social protection in Morocco, benefiting millions of citizens, children, and the elderly, as part of efforts to enhance digital social coverage and improve the transparency of direct support.

The ambassador confirmed that Morocco serves as a bridge to strengthen EU-African cooperation, especially in stability, development, and security in the Sahel, noting that the Kingdom’s experience in combating terrorism provides a solid foundation for enhancing collaboration in these vital areas.

In conclusion, he stated that the partnership between Morocco and the European Union continues to evolve through support for economic and social development programs, promoting energy transition, and enhancing governance, contributing to regional stability and prosperity. He added, “We are optimistic about the future of cooperation, where our visions intersect in areas of sustainable growth, youth empowerment, and investment in a shared future.”
