The Canadian Parliament received the President of the Kabyle Government to discuss developments regarding the independence of the Kabyle Republic.

This week, the Canadian federal parliament witnessed a debate on the issue of independence for the Kabyle region. This step reflects the shift of the matter from a local concern to a point of international political interest, following a meeting between the exiled Kabyle government leader, Ferhat Mehenni, and several Canadian MPs in Ottawa.

The meeting, held on February 25, included the leader of the Bloc Québécois, Yves-François Blanchet, along with his predecessor Mario Beaulieu and a number of parliamentarians interested in human rights and international issues. Discussions focused on the Kabyle movement’s call for self-determination and the pursuit of international recognition for what it terms the “Federal Republic of Kabylie.”

During the meeting, the Kabyle delegation presented a range of data related to the political and human rights situation in Algeria, criticizing the classification of the Kabyle’s self-determination movement (MAK) as a terrorist organization, arguing that this action aims to criminalize the political activities of the movement. They also addressed issues regarding arrests and legal proceedings against activists from the region, in addition to environmental and economic issues linked to forest fires and the exploitation of natural resources.

This move within a Western legislative body is seen by observers as an indicator of the expanding international interest in the issue, especially with it being raised in front of MPs from a G7 member country. Although the meeting does not signify an official endorsement of the separatist stance, it consolidates the inclusion of the issue in discussions beyond Algerian borders.

It seems that the independence of Kabylie is no longer merely an internal affair, but is gaining political attention in international circles, paving the way for a new phase of diplomatic engagement on the matter.
