Morocco’s Bus Market Poised for Sustainable Growth Over the Next Decade, According to International Study

A recent report from Panorama Data Insights Ltd, based in Tokyo and specializing in market analysis, predicts that Morocco’s bus market will see steady growth over the next ten years. This growth is driven by rapid urban expansion, modernization of public transport networks, and a gradual shift toward more sustainable and eco-friendly transportation solutions.

The study, titled “The Bus Market in Morocco: Size, Share, Trends, and Sector Analysis by Type, Use, Fuel Type, and Capacity – Market Forecast 2032,” suggests that the sector’s revenue could rise from approximately $207 million in 2023 to over $253 million by 2032, with an average annual growth rate of 2.3%. This indicates an increasing reliance on buses as a primary mode of urban transportation in Morocco.

The report attributes this growth to the rapid population increase in major cities, leading to higher demand for reliable and accessible transport. Additionally, worsening traffic congestion has prompted authorities to enhance public transport through network development, improved service quality, and expanded infrastructure.

Environmental considerations have become a key element, with authorities encouraging the integration of hybrid and electric buses into new fleets to reduce harmful emissions and air pollution, especially in larger cities. The benefits of electric buses, such as reduced energy consumption and operational costs over time, are also highlighted, alongside the development of necessary charging stations to facilitate their spread.

The study notes a technological advancement within the sector, as some operators have begun adopting GPS tracking systems, digital ticket platforms, and onboard internet services to improve operational efficiency, minimize delays, and enhance passenger comfort, thereby increasing buses’ competitiveness compared to other transport methods.

The report emphasizes the crucial role of the Moroccan government in supporting the sector’s growth by implementing appropriate legislation and launching financial and incentive mechanisms, including grants for acquiring eco-friendly buses and programs aimed at expanding intercity networks, which contribute to a comprehensive modernization of public transport.

Commenting on the study, economist Omar Kettani noted that the research focuses solely on urban transport and overlooks rural transport, which is vital for keeping students in school, particularly girls, as well as for creating new job opportunities and transforming villages into areas equipped similarly to cities.

Economist Khaled Hamouss also affirmed that the emphasis on developing buses in Morocco stems from the absence of a metro system in major cities, combined with the concentration of industrial areas on the peripheries of cities and the reliance on buses for labor transport. He anticipated that the actual number of buses would surpass the study’s projections, especially with preparations underway for the 2030 World Cup.

According to the report, the bus market in Morocco will continue its upward trajectory until 2032, supported by public policies, evolving transportation patterns, and a shift towards sustainable transport, making it a fundamental component of the national transportation system and a strategic lever for managing urban growth.
