Nizar Baraka announces a project to connect the Abid Rakrak and Um al-Rabi basins with a capacity of 800 million cubic meters annually.

The Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, revealed the launch of a project aimed at linking the Abid Rakrak and Um al-Rabi basins by the end of 2026, with a transfer capacity reaching 800 million cubic meters annually. This initiative is part of a strategy to enhance water security and redistribute resources across regions.
In an interview on the “Décryptage” program on MFM Radio, the minister explained that the project falls under what he termed “water highways,” which focus on transferring water from areas with abundance to those suffering shortages. This will provide the national system with increased flexibility to cope with successive years of drought.
Connecting the Abid Rakrak and Um al-Rabi basins will enable the transfer of up to 800 million cubic meters annually to support the supply of drinking water, secure the needs of high-pressure regions, and bolster agricultural stability.
Baraka emphasized that the project represents a significant step towards transitioning from temporary management of water crises to a long-term structural plan ensuring a more equitable and sustainable distribution of water resources in the kingdom.
