Morocco’s Marsa Maroc Operates Two Berths in Monrovia Port and Expands Its Investment Presence in Africa
In a new step towards expanding Moroccan investments on the African continent, the port management company “Marsa Maroc” has entered the strategic port sector in Liberia after signing a management contract with the National Port Authority of this West African nation.
According to a press release issued by the company, this agreement will allow for the operation and management of two berths in the strategic port of Monrovia, following its success in an international tender. The operation will be carried out through its international branch, “Marsa Maroc International Logistics” (MMIL).
The project involves rehabilitating the port’s infrastructure and equipping it, as well as managing bulk cargo operations, with a gradual entry into service planned starting in the first half of 2026.
In an analytical overview of the operation, the research center “BMCE Capital Global Research” (BKGR) clarified that the agreement not only has a contractual dimension but also provides Marsa Maroc with direct access to Liberia’s deep-water main port, which handles the majority of import and export flows.
The source pointed out that the group’s intervention could improve the port’s performance and support the efforts to modernize the port system initiated by the Liberian authorities, noting that the contract represents the first phase of a broader partnership that may, over the medium term, lead to a concession for the development of a multipurpose terminal.
The analysis considers this gradual approach to reflect Marsa Maroc’s ability to manage complex projects and respond to strategic needs in prioritized port environments, aligning with the strategic plan “Marsa 2030,” aimed at enhancing the group’s presence in Africa through value-added projects.
With its entry into the Liberian market, Liberia becomes the third African location where Marsa Maroc operates, joining a list of Moroccan companies that have expanded their investments in the continent, particularly in the banking, fertilizer, and mining sectors.
The company relies on an operational portfolio covering 34 terminals in 20 ports, with an annual throughput exceeding 60 million tons, providing a solid operational base that qualifies it for intervention in major port infrastructures.
Monrovia Free Port is Liberia’s main maritime gateway, receiving the majority of import and export traffic, and serves as a vital artery for the flow of essential goods and raw materials within the national economic development strategy, particularly concerning oil, gas, bulk materials, and containers.
