Morocco elected to the African Union Peace and Security Council for the third consecutive term
On Wednesday, it was announced that the Kingdom of Morocco has been elected as a member of the African Union Peace and Security Council for a new three-year term, having received over 34 votes during the polling process held alongside the executive council meetings of the Union.
This election marks the third consecutive time Morocco secures its seat on the council, following a two-year term from 2018 to 2020, and then three years from 2022 to 2025. This reflects the continued trust of African countries in Rabat’s role as a key player in security and peace matters on the continent.
Morocco’s election follows the withdrawal of the Polisario Front from the membership competition, a step analysts consider indicative of a decline in continental support for separatist positions and an increase in backing for Morocco’s stance on its territorial integrity. Observers noted that the council overlooked the Polisario’s request compared to Libya’s candidacy, signaling clear shifts in the balance of power within the African Union.
This new membership allows Morocco direct participation in discussions concerning conflicts, coups, and peacekeeping issues, alongside contributing to the shaping of decisions and recommendations that influence security and stability in the continent, particularly in the Sahel and West Africa. It also grants Rabat greater capacity to defend its strategic interests and enhance its presence within African alliances, bolstering its image as a reliable partner in combating terrorism and supporting stability.
This diplomatic achievement underscores Morocco’s growing stature within the African Union and reflects profound changes in the regional file in favor of the Kingdom, at a time when the separatist position is experiencing a clear decline at the continental level.
