Morocco Launches “Cashless Payment” Program to Enhance Digital Transformation in the Tourism Sector

In a new step to boost digital transformation in Morocco’s tourism sector, Fatima Zahra Amour, Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy, Mohamed Kettani, CEO of Attijariwafa Bank Group, and Leila Sarhan, Regional Director of Visa, signed a memorandum of understanding to launch the “Cashless Payment” program. This initiative aims to simplify the financial transaction experience for tourists and provide secure, globally recognized payment solutions.

A press release confirmed that this initiative seeks to enhance the competitiveness of stakeholders in the tourism sector by facilitating digital payment processes throughout tourists’ stays in the Kingdom.

Amour stated that Morocco achieved tourism revenues of 138 billion dirhams in 2025, reflecting the strength of the Moroccan tourism offering. She added that the evolution of expectations has made digital performance a key criterion, making the transition to a less cash-dependent economy an urgent necessity. She emphasized that this partnership is a pivotal step and called on all partners to engage in this dynamic.

For his part, Kettani explained that payment services have become a central element in the tourist experience, confirming that developing the tourism sector is a strategic issue for the national economy. He added that Attijariwafa Bank Group is committed to providing innovative and comprehensive payment solutions that meet international standards and contribute to enhancing competitiveness and supporting sustainable growth.

Leila Sarhan highlighted Visa’s essential role in supporting the digital transformation of Morocco’s tourism sector through its international expertise and technological capabilities, providing secure and innovative payment solutions that support local stakeholders. She noted that Morocco has exceeded its 2026 target of attracting 17.5 million visitors, recording a historic number of 20 million visitors in 2025.

Sarhan affirmed that cooperation with Morocco goes beyond technical aspects, becoming a true lever for growth, based on innovation and digital data, to enhance the digitization of the entire tourism value chain, from artisans and merchants to various stakeholders in the sector.
