Increase in Fish Catch Discharge at Laayoune Port Despite Decline in Certain Species

The quantities discharged from coastal and artisanal fishing at Laayoune Port saw an increase of 17 percent in 2025, according to data from the National Fisheries Office. The discharged quantity during the past year amounted to 209,954 tons, with the market value of these products rising to 1 billion 564 million 733 thousand dirhams, a 5 percent increase compared to 2024 (1 billion 487 million 280 thousand dirhams).

The same source added that the quantities discharged from pelagic fish increased by 28 percent, reaching 176,688 tons, with a financial value exceeding 691 million dirhams (an increase of 21 percent).

On the other hand, the quantities of white fish discharged at Laayoune Port during the aforementioned period decreased by 20 percent, totaling 24,699 tons, resulting in an 8 percent decline in financial value (326 million 930 thousand dirhams) compared to 2024 (30,993 tons / 356 million 357 thousand dirhams).

Regarding mollusks, the discharged quantities also recorded a decline of 10 percent, totaling 8,534 tons, with a 1 percent decrease in financial value, reaching 543 million 209 thousand dirhams. Furthermore, the quantities of crustaceans fell dramatically by 93 percent to just 33 tons (3 million 588 thousand dirhams), marking a decrease of 77 percent.

It is noteworthy that the National Fisheries Office reported that the quantity of marketed coastal and artisanal fish products at the national level during the past year decreased by 15 percent, amounting to 1 million 132 thousand 801 tons, while the commercial value of these catches declined by 4 percent to approximately 10.11 billion dirhams.
