Ryad Mezzour: The Government Tightens Penalties on Disaster Speculators and Exploitation of Ramadan to Raise Prices

In a recent statement, Industry and Trade Minister Ryad Mezzour announced that the government will take strict measures against speculators and price manipulators who exploit natural disasters, such as the floods in Ksar al-Kebir, or seasonal contexts like the approach of Ramadan. He affirmed, “Those who increase prices during this period will face repercussions.”

During a session of oral questions in the House of Representatives, the minister clarified that exceptional market inspections during Ramadan have reached approximately 30 visits since the beginning of the year, emphasizing that guidance is based on the type of consumption and speculation, while ensuring essential goods are available in the markets.

Mezzour pointed out two current issues: the first concerns sardine fishing, which will resume on February 15, positively impacting supply; the second relates to speculation in flood-affected areas. He assured that the government is working meticulously to combat crisis traders.

The minister stressed that “it is disgraceful to profit from the suffering of citizens, and the government has been clear and firm: those who raise prices will face consequences.” He mentioned that in some instances, goods are distributed free of charge to residents and that mixed committees continue daily monitoring to prevent hoarding.

Separately, Mezzour acknowledged a gradual decline in postal services in cities, despite coverage of all local communities, emphasizing that the government is working to generalize these services and improve their quality, particularly regarding direct social support.
