The medical team at the Pediatric Surgery Department of Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir, under the supervision of Professor Hind Sharabi, successfully performed the first surgical operation in the Souss-Massa region on a newborn girl just hours after her birth in the maternity ward of the hospital.

The surgical intervention focused on addressing a congenital malformation known as esophageal atresia, a defect characterized by a discontinuation of the esophagus, preventing it from connecting to the stomach, which hinders the passage of milk to the digestive system. This condition is often accompanied by a tracheoesophageal fistula, which can lead to choking or severe pneumonia if not treated quickly.

Prior to this achievement, similar cases were referred to the university hospital in Marrakech due to a lack of anesthesia and resuscitation equipment designated for newborns in the region.

The success of the operation was the result of integrated cooperation among various medical teams, including pediatric surgeons led by Professors Benmassoud Zineb and Zouayr Yassine, the neonatal resuscitation team headed by Professor Daoudi Abdul Latif, and the anesthesia team under Professor Nasik Hicham, alongside the maternity department led by Professor Farouki Abdullah, supported by nursing staff and the pediatric surgical operating room of the hospital.

This operation is part of a series of specialized surgical interventions conducted since the hospital’s opening, addressing several cases of newborns with complex congenital malformations in the digestive, urinary, and respiratory systems, all of which were successfully completed, reflecting the commitment of the medical and nursing team to provide advanced care and enhance healthcare services in the region, while prioritizing the health of both mother and child.
