Dutch Praise for the Boom in Morocco’s Film Industry
Roland Oudenaarden, the Film Commissioner of the Netherlands, affirmed that Morocco’s film industry is currently experiencing an “extraordinary boom,” which qualifies the kingdom as the guest of honour at the European Film Market, the professional and commercial segment of the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale).
The Dutch official, who participated in the “Country Session” workshop held within the framework of the Berlinale’s co-production market, pointed out that Morocco has begun attracting major international film productions, citing particularly Christopher Nolan’s film “The Odyssey,” which showcases the kingdom’s appeal as a filming location due to its diverse natural landscapes and specialized infrastructure.
In a statement to the Moroccan News Agency, Oudenaarden highlighted the historical and cultural ties between Morocco and the Netherlands, noting the significant Moroccan community in the Netherlands and the emergence of numerous talents of Moroccan descent, particularly in screenwriting, directing, and acting.
He added that several Dutch productions created by filmmakers of Moroccan origin, who are widely recognized in the Netherlands, have drawn inspiration from Moroccan heritage and traditions, with many being filmed in Morocco and achieving notable success with audiences.
The official lauded the dynamic exchanges between the film industries of both countries, expressing his commitment to maintaining regular communication with his Moroccan counterparts and a shared desire to enhance bilateral cooperation and develop joint productions.
The “Country Session” workshop gathered a select group of international producers from around twenty countries, where representatives from film bodies in Morocco, Spain, the Netherlands, Japan, the Czech Republic, and Estonia presented their national systems and production capabilities.
It is worth noting that Morocco has been chosen this year as the guest of honour at the European Film Market, making it the first African country to receive this distinction at this prestigious international film event, reflecting the growing status of the national film industry on the global stage.
