Withdrawal of Old Banknotes from Circulation in Morocco with Replacement Available Until 2030
The decision to withdraw certain banknotes from circulation in Morocco took effect on January 1st of this year. This measure affects several denominations, allowing for their replacement until the end of 2030.
This action is part of Decree No. 2.25.966, issued on the 2nd of Rajab 1447, corresponding to December 23, 2025, and published in the latest issue of the official gazette dated January 1, 2026. It states that banknotes with expiring legal tender status will lose their validity from the aforementioned date.
According to the decree, which followed discussions at Bank Al-Maghrib Council on September 23, 2025, the affected banknotes include denominations of 10, 50, 100, and 200 dirhams, which were issued under a decree dated May 27, 1987.
The withdrawal also includes the 10 dirham banknotes issued on November 27, 1990, as well as the 20 dirham banknotes released on July 10, 1996.
The same source confirmed that the process for exchanging the withdrawn banknotes will remain freely available without restrictions, either at bank branches or at Bank Al-Maghrib, until December 31, 2030.
