Trump Vetoes Two Bills

American President Donald Trump has exercised his presidential veto against two legislative proposals, marking his first use of this power during his second term. He rejected a plan to build a pipeline for drinking water and to expand a reservation for Indigenous peoples.

The White House announced on Wednesday that the president opposed these legislative texts, which had received bipartisan support from both Democrats and Republicans earlier this week.

To override the presidential veto, both the Senate and the House of Representatives must pass these bills with a two-thirds majority.

One of the bills aimed to complete a project from the 1960s intended to bring drinking water to the Great Plains region east of Colorado.

President Trump justified his decision by citing what he described as excessively high costs, arguing in an explanatory letter sent to Congress that this veto protects American taxpayers from funding “expensive and unreliable policies.”

The proposal to construct the pipeline dates back to the presidency of John F. Kennedy and was approved by both houses of Congress at that time.

The White House also announced that President Trump vetoed another bill that aimed to expand the Miccosukee Tribe’s reservation to include a portion of the Everglades National Park in southern Florida, known as the Osceola Camp.

President Trump affirmed that the Miccosukee Tribe does not have the authority to occupy the Osceola Camp area, emphasizing that his administration would not allow taxpayer dollars to fund “projects that serve special interests,” particularly for groups “not aligned” with his immigration policy.

U.S. presidents rarely resort to using the veto. During his first term in the White House, Donald Trump used the veto against ten legislative texts, while his Democratic predecessor Joe Biden resorted to this measure on 13 occasions during his four years in office.
