Iran Protests: Washington Threatens Intervention if Authorities Fire on Protesters
U.S. President warned that the country would intervene if Iranian authorities open fire on peaceful protesters, asserting that Washington is closely monitoring developments and is prepared to act if necessary.
Donald Trump specified in a post on his Truth Social platform that the United States is on high alert and ready to take action, indicating the possibility of direct steps should the situation escalate on the ground.
This position coincides with the widening protests sparked by deteriorating economic conditions, which have spread from major cities to rural areas after the first reported fatalities among both protesters and security forces, according to authorities. At least seven people have died in two days.
Two deaths were reported on Wednesday, followed by five more on Thursday, in four cities predominantly inhabited by the Lore ethnic group, raising concerns about increased security measures in response to the protests, especially as momentum wanes in Tehran while expanding in other areas.
These movements are among the largest since the 2022 protests that erupted following the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who died while in police custody. However, the current pace has not yet reached the level of intensity and spread that characterized those earlier events.
Azna, a city in Lorestan Province, about 300 kilometers southwest of Tehran, witnessed the most violent confrontations, with circulated videos showing fires in the streets and the sound of gunfire, as protesters chanted slogans condemning the situation.
