Nigeria’s Coach After Defeat to Morocco: “We Gave Everything We Had and We Have Ongoing Work”

In the aftermath of Nigeria’s loss to Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Super Eagles coach Eric Schaefer spoke at length in a press conference about his team’s performance, tactics, his reaction to the match, and what lies ahead for the national team.

The match, which ended in a goalless draw after extra time at Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium in Rabat, was decided by penalty shootouts, featuring an outstanding performance by Morocco’s goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who thwarted Nigeria’s attacks at crucial moments.

Schaefer clarified that his team played with a 4-4-2 formation, which he had also utilized in previous matches, noting that the intention was to apply high pressure from the outset. However, the team struggled to maintain this pressure after about 15 to 20 minutes into the match, remarking that the players lost some mobility and technical strength compared to their usual level. He emphasized that this issue was not solely due to fatigue but also to a decline in performance on the field.

The coach mentioned that he made tactical adjustments during the game, including introducing players in midfield for better balance and selecting players for penalty kicks based on their training performance.

Schaefer described the match’s ending moments as “extremely difficult,” pointing out that the team had worked hard to prepare for the penalty shootouts during training sessions. However, he accepted the outcome as part of football, which does not always reflect effort alone.

He expressed pride in his players and their efforts, stating that the team fought for every ball until the end, and that this fighting spirit remains a positive element to build upon for future matches.

Regarding Nigeria’s future after this defeat, the coach stated that he would not make any decisions about his professional future immediately following the match, and that discussions would take place with the relevant federations after the third-place playoff against Egypt. He added that the team’s focus is currently on preparing for this upcoming match and that all options regarding his continuity as coach are still open.

Despite the disappointment of exiting at the semi-final stage, Schaefer’s comments conveyed an appreciation for the players’ efforts and the competitive spirit exhibited by the team, underscoring that this experience—despite its challenges—will serve as an important lesson in the journey of this generation in the Africa Cup of Nations.
