Lafitit: 80% of taxi vehicles have been upgraded with fuel-efficient engines

Minister of Interior, Abdelouafi Laftit, has revealed that approximately 80% of the national taxi fleet has been renewed, replacing old vehicles with new ones equipped with modern engines that reduce fuel consumption by about 40%. This initiative has contributed to minimizing negative environmental impacts and improving road safety indicators.

In a written response to queries regarding the support for small and large taxi owners in acquiring electric vehicles, Laftit explained that this renewal facilitates improved comfort and safety conditions for both passengers and drivers, linking the benefit of support to the condition of purchasing new vehicles that comply with the licensed number of passengers for each type of taxi.

Laftit further stated that the taxi renewal support program aims to modernize the national fleet, enhance the quality of services provided, contribute to environmental conservation, and improve the working conditions of professionals in this sector. It is part of initiatives aimed at upgrading the taxi transport sector and modernizing its fleet.

The minister noted that the program allows for the replacement of old cars with electric or hybrid ones; however, professionals still tend to prefer thermal engine vehicles, except for some isolated cases. This is likely due to the high prices of electric cars, limited charging infrastructure, and the frequent need for recharging throughout the day.

Laftit confirmed that significant advancements in electric vehicle production, including increased range, reduced charging time, and the availability of refueling and maintenance services, along with relatively lower prices and diverse professional offerings, will contribute to a gradual increase in their use within the taxi sector in the coming years.

The minister concluded by stating that the Ministry of Interior is prepared to engage positively with other relevant sectors and entities to promote the adoption of eco-friendly vehicles in the transport sector, in line with public programs aimed at reducing polluting emissions and accelerating the energy transition, particularly in energy-intensive economic and service activities, notably transport.
