His Majesty King Mohammed VI presided over a working meeting today, Wednesday, at the Royal Palace in Casablanca, dedicated to following up on the progress of the new port and industrial complex project in Nador West Mediterranean. This initiative is part of the royal strategy aimed at enhancing the Kingdom’s economy through a permanent connection to global value chains by establishing advanced port infrastructure.

During the meeting, the Chairman of the project’s board, Mr. Fouad El Bourini, presented a detailed report on the status of the works and the achievements made to date, confirming the project’s readiness for operational launch in the fourth quarter of this year.

The Nador West Mediterranean project builds on the success of the Tanger Med Port, which has become the leading maritime hub in Africa and the Mediterranean, aiming to create a comprehensive national port system that strengthens the competitiveness of the national economy and contributes to job creation and balanced regional development.

The port complex includes an integrated project that combines a state-of-the-art port with an extensive industrial, logistical, and energy platform. To date, the project has attracted public and private investments totaling 51 billion dirhams. The port’s essential infrastructure includes 5.4 kilometers of breakwaters, 4 kilometers of quays, and 4 energy centers, along with the signing of concession agreements for the container terminals, which will gradually enter operation this year.

The complex will host an energy port featuring the Kingdom’s first liquefied natural gas station with an annual capacity of 5 billion cubic meters, in addition to a fuel station, enhancing Morocco’s energy sovereignty. Upon completion, the port’s annual capacity will reach 5 million containers and 35 million tons of cargo, with the potential to increase future capacity to 12 million containers and 15 million tons of liquid cargo.

The project also involves the establishment of new industrial zones spanning 700 hectares, which have already seen the initial installations of international operators, with confirmed private investments reaching 20 billion dirhams, reflecting the confidence that Morocco enjoys among major investors in the maritime and industrial sectors.

Following the presentation, His Majesty the King issued his royal instructions to the relevant parties to take all necessary measures to ensure the project launches successfully, to implement specialized training programs to support investors, facilitate youth integration, and enhance employment opportunities. He also emphasized the need for the neighboring regions to benefit from the project’s advantages through urban rehabilitation programs and a multi-dimensional action plan to ensure the sustainable development of the port.

Present at the working meeting were the Minister of Interior, Mr. Abdelouafi Laftit; the Minister of Economy and Finance, Mrs. Nadia Fettah; the Minister of Equipment and Water, Mr. Nizar Baraka; the Minister of Industry and Trade, Mr. Ryad Mezzour; and the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Mrs. Leila Benali, alongside the Chairman of the Nador West Mediterranean board, Mr. Fouad El Bourini.
